OTT: Friend or Foe to Pay TV? Study Suggests Friend—and Opportunity

The latest research from Horowitz Research’s Multiplatform Content & Services report shows that over-the-top streaming video on demand (OTT SVOD) services remain a complement to, not a replacement for, traditional pay TV: 40% of Internet users have multichannel and an OTT SVOD service, 42% have multichannel only, 11% have an OTT SVOD service only, and 7% have neither. Among OTT SVOD users, 78% are also multichannel subscribers. But recent OTT developments from traditional pay TV distributors—DISH’s Sling TV and DirecTV’s Yaveo—could start changing the game. Antitrust: Commission sends Statement of Objections on cross-border provision of pay-TV services available in UK and Ireland

The European Commission has today sent a Statement of Objections to Sky UK and six major US film studios: Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. The Commission takes the preliminary view that each of the six studios and Sky UK have bilaterally agreed to put in place contractual restrictions that prevent Sky UK from allowing EU consumers located elsewhere to access, via satellite or online, pay-TV services available in the UK and Ireland. Without these restrictions, Sky UK would be free to decide on commercial grounds whether to sell its pay-TV services to such consumers requesting access to its services, taking into account the regulatory framework including, as regards online pay-TV services, the relevant national copyright laws. 27.4% more subscribers for Nova-Forthnet

Greece’s Nova ended 2014 with a record 363,549 triple play subscribers, or 27.4% more than a year earlier.

Meanwhile, its pay-TV subscriber base grew by 12.1% year-on-year to reach a record 507,261.
