Over 3,000 On Demand services in Europe

The number of on demand services in Europe has topped 3,000 with the UK, France and Germany providing a home to the greatest number of services.

The European Commission-backed report by the European Audiovisual Observatory report shows that as of February 2014 here were 3,088 on demand services within the European Union.

They break down into catch-up TV services (1,104 services listed), branded channels of broadcasters on open platforms (711 services listed) and VOD film services (409 listed).

The countries with the most services present are the United Kingdom (682 services established), France (434 services established) and Germany (330 services established). Also, 223 services established in the United States and targeting European countries are currently available in one or several European countries.

In 2013 developments in VOD services were charactarised by the increasing importance of connected mobile devices and their importance in video consumption.

There has also been the rise and expansion of over-the-top players Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Google.

Data shows the main US VOD players began to enter Europe in 2012, Netflix having successfully expanded in its domestic market before starting on its international expansion.

Amazon expanded its Amazon Instant Watch SVoD service by acquiring the DVD rental and SVOD service LOVEFiLM in 2011 for £200 million. HBO has expanded its offering, being already present in Eastern Europe.
